response to discussion question

I need a 175 word response to this:According to the American Psychological Association (n.d.), depression is defined as a major depressive disorder that occurs quite commonly and as a serious medical illness that negatively impacts how one thinks, feels, and behaves. Often we can see the characteristics displayed on ones’ face or their body language, alerting us that something is amiss. However, if this is the only criteria that are used to determine depression, then Freud’s theory would be supported. Yet, this idea implies that depression is something that one has control of when factors such as biochemistry, genetics, personality, and environment play role in the development of depression (American Psychological Association, n.d.).The reading material for this week points out that heart disease and depression go hand in hand and that people with heart disease are three times more likely to experience depression than those with other serious illnesses, or healthy people. Stress, which can be a result of multiple factors, is also a consideration in the development of depression and can impact the body negatively (Butcher, Mineka, Hooley, & Nock, 2016). If this was the basis for Freud’s theory, then I would agree. I can see how having a stressful health condition would make one more likely to suffer depression. I see stressful factors and illness turned inward into depression, and perhaps anger about those things. I suppose one would have to examine what is causing the anger as opposed to just anger itself being turned inward.ReferencesAmerican Psychiatric Association. (n.d.). What is depression?.
